Food Finds: Food & Nutrition Expo Edition
I promised to let you all know about the fun new foods and products I saw at the Food and Nutrition Expo in San Diego last week. I found a few diamonds in the rough and also fell in love again with some old favs. Hope you find something new to try!
My love affair with Chobani yogurt continues. Especially after I met Executive Chef Jason Duckworth and tried his yogurt hummus. So creamy and delicious, all with no added oil. The very best part of visiting the Chobani booth was tasting their upcoming new flavors: blood orange, passion fruit, and apple cinnamon. The passion fruit had real passion fruit seeds inside and was the perfect combination of sweet and sour. Definitely my favorite. No pics of the new flavors because they aren’t available until January.
Another old favorite representing at FNCE was Australis Barramundi. Not only did I learn more about the company’s sustainability practices and “green” fish farming, I also got to meet the lovely Kate Geagan (RD spokesperson for them) and grab a signed copy of her book. Bonus.
I found a few interesting things for those of you who find it hard to drink plain water. Nordic Naturals has a mix-in Omega 3 supplement with Vitamin D. And it’s bubbly. Just pour into your water bottle and shake.
The other is from Sunsweet. It’s a fiber supplement called Supra Fiber that you can also mix in water or juice. It’s fruit flavored and contains 5 grams of fiber per packet. Try adding some to your smoothies or stir into your oatmeal.
Sunsweet also had these tasty Plum Amazins. They’re cute little diced dried plums that you can throw into yogurt, oatmeal, salad, meat dishes or cookies. They have more fiber, less sugar, and fewer calories than raisins.
Always on the lookout for good protein powder options, I was really impressed with Tera’s Whey. I like their cool packaging and clean ingredients. Each scoop provides 24 grams of organic whey protein and little else. All organic and made with whey from cow, goat, and sheep cheese, this company takes pride in their practices and uses only ethically sourced dairy. Also, with flavors like goji berry, bourbon vanilla, and pomegranate-cranberry, what’s not to love?
One of my favorite products has to be the Crispy Green freeze-dried fruit. These crispy little fruit bites were awesome. These are not just dried fruit…these are freeze-dried fruit…which means you get a crispy, light bite of flavor without the chewy texture of dried fruit. I loved the crispy cantaloupe….addictive and delicious with no added sugar, sweeteners or preservatives.
I can’t end this post without sharing with you my ultimate find….Sunland Peanut Butter, made with 100% Valencia peanuts. First off, Valencia peanuts are naturally sweeter than other peanuts, so the peanut butter has a natural sweet taste. But these guys went a step further and they created amazing flavors of peanut butter to please almost any palate. I could not get enough of the Organic Crunchy Chipotle Chili, Thai Ginger and Red Pepper or the Cherry Vanilla. Amazingly delicious and easy for me to replicate at home. 😉
